Many people who purchase backyard play structures elect to leave grass underneath. Instead, we highly recommend using some type of safety surface. Some of the options include wood chips, pea gravel, sand and shredded rubber. Many people ask about the rubber matting commonly found in public playgrounds. However this can be installed only over black top or concrete. We recommend shredded rubber, which we can install.
Why we recommend shredded rubber:
- It does not deteriorate over time.
- It never loses its effectiveness as a safety surface.
- It is completely non-toxic.
- It will not attract insects or animals.
- It does not absorb pesticides or sustain fungus and mold growth.
- It is not affected by moisture and freezing temperatures,
When we install a safety surface with a new play structure we create a "box" or safety zone that will border the play structure. We remove the grass from the box, construct a railroad tie border, and lay landscape fabric over the area to prevent weed growth naturally. We can also install this type of safety surface for existing swing sets and play structures.
